Amazon AWS Expands Data Center Investments in Europe

Amazon AWS Expands Data Center Investments in Europe

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing unit of Amazon, is in talks with the Italian government to invest billions of euros in the development of data centers in the country. This move is part of AWS's strategy to strengthen its cloud service offering in Europe. Discussions regarding the size and location of the investment are still ongoing, with the option of expanding the current site in Milan or building a new facility being considered.

AWS first launched a cloud region in Italy in 2020, as part of a 2 billion euro investment plan that will last until 2029. This investment includes providing cloud services to large companies such as luxury car manufacturer Ferrari and insurance company Assicurazioni Generali.

Previous Investments in Europe

AWS investments in Europe are not just limited to Italy. Recently, AWS announced an investment of 15.7 billion euros for data centers in the Aragon region, Spain. This figure far exceeds the initial plan of 2.5 billion euros announced in 2021. Additionally, in Germany, AWS plans to invest 7.8 billion euros until 2040.

Although investment in Italy is estimated at billions of euros, the amount may not be as large as that in Spain. An official announcement regarding the details of this investment will not be made in the near future. This move signals AWS' continued commitment to expanding their cloud infrastructure across European countries.

Cloud Infrastructure and Services

AWS has built the infrastructure necessary to provide cloud services for various sectors, including the telecommunications industry which requires large resources. For example, earlier this month, Telefonica Deutschland announced plans to move one million customers to the AWS cloud. This step shows large companies' confidence in AWS's ability to provide reliable and secure cloud services.

Data Security and Privacy

Last year, AWS announced an initiative to store data on servers located in the European Union. This step aims to protect data privacy for governments and customers in highly regulated industries. This initiative is in line with the European Union's increasingly stringent data regulations and the need for compliance with applicable data privacy laws.

AWS's large investment in Italy and other European countries underscores Amazon's commitment to strengthening its presence in the European cloud market. By continuing to build infrastructure and expand services, AWS strives to meet the needs of customers in various sectors, including the telecommunications and automotive industries. Although still in the discussion stage, this investment shows the huge potential for growth of cloud services in Europe and the important role AWS will play in driving digital transformation in the region.

Amazon Web Services continues to demonstrate its commitment to expanding and strengthening its infrastructure in Europe. With ambitious investment plans in various countries, AWS strives to provide advanced and reliable cloud services to a wide range of industrial sectors, while meeting the European Union's stringent data privacy regulations. This investment will not only strengthen AWS's position in the global cloud market, but also provide significant economic benefits to host countries such as Italy, Spain and Germany.
